Cell Phones and the Growing Trend

I think almost everyone has a cell phone right? I for one, recently got mine last November for my birthday, but i was curios, what ever happens to all those old cell phones? I mean with all those new smartphones and Iphones they do get recycled right? Or at least re-used? Well I did some research and turns out, cell phones don't get as recycled as i thought. The article, "Old Cell Phones-Where do they GO?" by James Monsieur in ,http://www.cellforcash.com/free-articles/old-cell-phones-where-do-they-all-go.asp, mentions how every American has easy access to an upgrade or replacement for a cell phone which leads to 500 million un-used old cell phones just lying in your drawer. Well not only is it a bad thing, but statistics show not many cell  phones get recycled as the amount that are manufactured and sold. Only around 10 million get recycled and I think we can all agree and do the math as Monsieur clearly says it " it doesn't take a rocket scientist." In reality, cell phones are a neat gadget, i for one love mine, the browsing, the texting and the enjoyment i get, but i also know i can at least correctly recycle my old cell phone instead of just leaving it in my drawer where instead i can feel great about cleaning up the earth. Cell phone companies even have boxes to throw in your old cell phone. So instead of just tossing your old cell phone around, go to a cell phone company and dispose of it correctly, where you can safely and environmentally friendly say goodbye.

  1. I was never aware of how cell phones were just tossed around instead of being recycled. I think that it is a very terrible thing and that people should start to recycle their old cell phones in order to try and help our planet.

  2. I feel really bad for keeping all my old phones now...I figured everyone else recycled theirs so what would it matter if I didn't? I guess too many people think that way. Really interesting article, I'll definitely recycle them now. :)

  3. I heard that these phones end up killing East Asian children because in the poorest parts of the region their job is to fry circuit boards for their trace minerals (gold, etc.). I think that this is a bad environmental crisis and a bad humanitarian crisis.

  4. I had 2 old phones that stopped working. I didn't think My cell phone provider would take them back, so I kept them around the house for my niece and nephew to play with. Had I known there was a way to recycle them, I would have been more to happy to do it. However, I'm a big history buff and I know that keeping my old phone would make it a nice memorable antique of how the technological world evolved from all these phones to chips in our brains, haha

  6. Oh wow. I have gone through way too many phones, some of them went swimming with me, I ran one over with the car and some other interesting things, but once they stopped working I never even thought about where they went or what people do with them. This is really cool

  7. I think the problem is education. I have an old cell phone that's just lying around because I don't know what to do with it, and I don't think I'm an exception. People need to know how to handle this problem, so I am glad that you have taken the initiative.
